2-12:
"The Survival Syndrome"
In
this pre-Corrigan episode, Romano is shot in the head by a carjacker
causing him to lose his nerve on the job, while Hooker is accused of
shooting Greg, an unarmed teen, who had become involved with the very
same carjacking thieves, who steal cars and re-condition them so they
can no longer be traced (referred to in the episode as "chop shop
jobs").
Greg's
friend David Harmon, another teen who initiated David into the carjacking
fold, is captured
by Hooker and Romano as a potential lead to finding the carjackers who
were responsible for the death of Greg. The District Attorney's office
decides to have Hooker stand trial for murder, while Romano (even with
a concussion) makes plans to start up a side-business selling papaya
oil at Sherry's Bar.
 As
this eminently-quotable episode begins, Hooker laments the fact that
his wife Fran has gone back to work as a nurse at Mercy Hospital, while
Romano joins him out on a routine patrol . . .
